  3. This is the README.TXT file distributed with Icon
  4. Manager for Windows NT version 1.0 (beta).

  9. OVERVIEW
  10. --------
  11. Icon Manager is a powerful tool for working with
  12. icons in the Windows NT operating environment.  The
  13. same drag-and-drop interface used by Program Manager
  14. allows icons to easily be moved, copied, and organ-
  15. ized into files within Icon Manager.  Unlike other
  16. applications which offer awkward procedures for
  17. installing icons into Program Manager, Icon Manager
  18. will install icons into Program Manager or Norton
  19. Desktop DIRECTLY using the wizardry of Windows'
  20. Dynamic Data Exchange.  For those who would like
  21. to create or edit their own icons, Icon Manager
  22. taps the power of OLE to whisk you into a edit
  23. session with Paintbrush by just double-clicking on
  24. an icon.  All of these features and more make
  25. Icon Manager the most complete icon tool available
  26. for the Windows operating environment.
  27.  
  28. REGISTRATION
  29. ------------
  30. Icon Manager is not free software.  It is released
  31. as shareware, which provides the opportunity for
  32. the program to be evaluated before it is purchased.
  33. Complete information on how to register Icon Manager
  34. is included in the REGISTER.TXT file.
  35.  
  36. DOCUMENTATION
  37. -------------
  38. Icon Manager includes on-line help that covers all
  39. aspects of program operation.  Some customers have
  40. asked why Icon Manager does not come with an oper-
  41. ations manual.  The main reason for this is to
  42. provide current documentation right along with
  43. every program update.  Since the first release
  44. of Icon Manager in 1990, Impact Software has
  45. never asked registered users for an upgrade fee.
  46. New versions that users acquire from their
  47. shareware channel continue to honor previous
  48. registrations.  By including on-line help with
  49. each release, we are able to provide up-to-date
  50. information for both new and updating users.
  51.  
  52. This is not intended to suggest that current
  53. registrations will always be valid for
  54. future releases, but rather that this method
  55. of providing documentation makes it easier
  56. for us to provide no-charge updates when
  57. possible.

  60. INSTALLING ICON MANAGER
  61. -----------------------
  62. The Icon Manager package includes a graphical Windows
  63. installation program using the standard name of SETUP.EXE.
  64. You should place all of the files included in the package
  65. on a floppy disk or in a temporary directory of your hard
  66. drive.
  67.  
  68. SETUP requires about 240K bytes of hard disk space to
  69. complete the installation of Icon Manager.
  70.  
  71. Run SETUP by selecting the 'Run...' command from the
  72. File menu of Program Manager or File Manager. Enter
  73. "d:\SETUP" as the Command Line, where "d" is the
  74. drive/directory that you are installing Icon Manager FROM
  75. (i.e. A:\SETUP).

  77. SETUP will prompt for the target directory you would like
  78. to install Icon Manager to on your hard disk.  Accept the
  79. default or enter a directory of your choice.  Select OK
  80. to install Icon Manager.

  92.  SOFTWARE LICENSE
  93.  
  94.  Non-licensed users are granted a limited license to use Icon
  95.  Manager on a 30-day trial basis for the purpose of determining
  96.  whether Icon Manager is suitable for their needs.  The use
  97.  of Icon Manager, except for the initial 30-day trial,
  98.  requires registration.  The use of unlicensed copies of Icon
  99.  Manager, outside of the initial 30-day trial, by any person,
  100.  business, corporation, government agency or any other entity is
  101.  strictly prohibited.
  102.  
  103.  A single user license permits a user to use Icon Manager
  104.  only on a single computer.  Licensed users may use the
  105.  program on different computers, as long as there is NO
  106.  POSSIBILITY of it being used at one location while it is
  107.  being used at another, or on a computer network by more than
  108.  one user at a time.
  109.  
  110.  No one may modify or patch the Icon Manager executable files
  111.  in any way, including but not limited to decompiling,
  112.  disassembling, or otherwise reverse engineering the program.
  113.  
  114.  A limited license is granted to copy and distribute Icon Manager
  115.  only for the trial use of others, subject to the above
  116.  limitations, and also the following:
  117.  
  118.   1)    Icon Manager and all of its release files must be copied
  119.         in unmodified form, complete with the file containing
  120.         this license information.
  121.  
  122.   2)    No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested or
  123.         accepted, except as authorized below:
  124.  
  125.         A) Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (sysops)
  126.            may make Icon Manager available for downloading only as
  127.            long as the above conditions are met.  An overall or
  128.            time-dependent charge for the use of the bulletin board
  129.            system is permitted as long as there is not a specific
  130.            charge for the download of Icon Manager.
  131.  
  132.         B) Vendors of user-supported or shareware software approved by
  133.            the ASP may distribute Icon Manager, subject to the
  134.            above conditions, without specific permission.  Non-
  135.            approved vendors may distribute Icon Manager only after
  136.            obtaining written permission from Impact Software.
  137.            Such permission is usually granted.  Please write for
  138.            details (enclose your catalog).

  140.         C) Non-profit user groups may distribute copies of the
  141.            Icon Manager diskette to their members, subject to
  142.            the above conditions, without specific permission.
  143.            Non-profit groups may collect a disk duplication fee
  144.            not to exceed five dollars.
  145.  
  146.   LIMITED WARRANTY
  147.  
  148.   Impact Software warrants that all disks provided are
  149.   free from defects in material and workmanship, assuming
  150.   normal use, for a period of 90 days from the date of
  151.   purchase.
  152.  
  153.   Impact Software warrants that the program will perform
  154.   in substantial compliance with the documentation supplied
  155.   with the software product.  If a significant defect in
  156.   the product is found, the Purchaser may return the
  157.   product for a refund.  In no event will such a refund
  158.   exceed the purchase price of the product.
  159.  
  160.   EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, IMPACT SOFTWARE DISCLAIMS ALL
  161.   WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT
  162.   LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND
  163.   FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, WITH RESPECT TO THE
  164.   PRODUCT.  SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE DEFECTIVE, THE
  165.   PURCHASER ASSUMES THE RISK OF PAYING THE ENTIRE COST OF
  166.   ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR CORRECTION AND ANY
  167.   INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.  IN NO EVENT WILL
  168.   IMPACT SOFTWARE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER
  169.   (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF
  170.   BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS
  171.   INFORMATION AND THE LIKE) ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR THE
  172.   INABILITY TO USE THIS PRODUCT EVEN IF IMPACT SOFTWARE
  173.   HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

  175.   Use of this product for any period of time constitutes
  176.   your acceptance of this agreement and subjects you to its
  177.   contents.

  179.   U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS
  180.  
  181.   Use, duplication, or disclosure by the Government is subject
  182.   to restrictions as set forth in subdivision (b)(3)(ii) of
  183.   the Rights in Technical Data and Computer Software clause at
